John Van
Thiel “The Voice of Elvis”
John Van Thiel of Racine, Wisconsin, mesmerizes audiences with his uncanny
tribute to Elvis Presley. Whether singing an early rocker, a soulful ballad, or
a hip-swiveling movie tune, John has mastered the Elvis sound so well that it
just might give you goose bumps. "It's all about authenticity. I try to sound as
close to the original as possible. People always think I'm lip-syncing...it's
the ultimate compliment." Fans respond not only to John's voice and appearance,
but to this sincerity and humble charm as well.
John’s passion for singing Elvis began at an early age, but it wasn’t until
three years ago that he began his career as an entertainer after winning a top
slot in a national competition his first time out. He now performs regularly at
private, corporate, and public events throughout the upper Midwest. He
occassionally guest stars with the Doo-Wop Daddies and the Oldies But Goodies
Spectacular bands out of Milwaukee. John recently won both nights at the Parade
of Kings invitational competition at the Menominee Casino in Keshena, Wisconsin.
What’s the best thing about portraying the King? "It’s the people. Everyone
connects to Elvis in some way. I get to bring that to life for them and make it
very personal. I’m really fortunate that I can make others so happy doing what I
enjoy."
Though he prefers the younger Elvis look, John loves singing all of Elvis’ material, especially some of the lesser-known songs. He portrays the King with sincerity and reverence.
